  19.           This file is a short description of a presentation given at the
  20.            1990 American ElectroEncephalographic Society Annual Meeting

  23.                        Study of the Frontal Speech Area with
  24.                       TransCranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

  30.        TransCranial magnetic stimulation   (TMS)  at  8  to  25  Hertz  was
  31.        performed on 4 subjects over the frontal area.
  32.  
  33.        Over each side stimulation was performed  with  the  11  CM diameter
  34.        coil held flat  on  the scalp and the outer edge consecutively  held
  35.        over the 16  positions  of a 4 X 4 grid with 1.5 CM distance between
  36.        grid points.  The anterior-inferior corner of the grid was electrode
  37.        position F7.
  38.  
  39.        All subjects were  being  evaluated   for   surgical   treatment  of
  40.        medically intractable epilepsy.     Intracarotid     amytal     test
  41.        demonstrated left hemisphere speed dominance in all.
  42.  
  43.        TMS induced speech  arrest  in all patients when applied to a SINGLE
  44.        GRID POSITION over the LEFT HEMISPHERE.
  45.  
  46.        In all subjects, this position WAS  DIFFERENT  and anterior to those
  47.        that induced laryngeal or contralateral face and hand movements.

  49.        This study demonstrates that TMS is capable of IDENTIFYING a frontal
  50.        area different from the motor cortex, which when stimulated  INDUCES
  51.        SPEECH ARREST.
